A hour from Portland, in the heart of downeast Maine.
Within a five minute walk of our house, Pemaquid Beach is our wonderful neighborhood beach. In 2020, they build a new pavilion with restrooms, beach chair rentals and an excellent snack bar. With soft, fine sand that is combed daily during the summer, this beach is perfect for walks and relaxing.
“Little Beach” is a tidal beach located on Fish Point Road. It’s well worth a visit and is a great place to find clams at low tide and catch some of our amazing sunsets.
Reconstructed in 1908, Ford William Henry was the largest fort in New England when it was built in 1692. Today, it’s open for tours and is part of the Colonial Pemaquid State Historic Site.
Visit Shaw’s Fish & Lobster Wharf Restaurant in New Harbor to eat on the deck or pick out lobsters to steam yourself at Half Shell.
The Cupboard Cafe is located on Huddle Road, only a mile or so from Hawthorne School and cottage. Breakfasts there can’t be beat, but get there early—the sticky buns sell out by mid morning.
A five-minute walk from our home is The Contented Sole. A restaurant which offers casual indoor and outdoor dining on the wharf. Try their phenomenal clam chowder (the best we’ve ever had) and don’t miss the lobster club sandwich.

With too many unique locations and village stores, there is no lack of shopping for art, antiques, and special artisan wares to take home. A few of our favorites are below.
Pemaquid Craft Co-op in New Harbor is a neat place to shop local crafts and find a treasure to take home.
Round Pond is a fabulous little village with easy access to the harbor and wonderful quaint shops for antiquing and shopping. Check out Granite Hall for a walk into the past for penny candy and local crafts.
Damariscotta has a great “Main Street” have lunch at the old-fashioned soda bar located within Reny’s and the fantastic bookstore Sherman’s as well as a host of restaurants and galleries.
